Under the Udala Trees

By Chinelo Okparanta.

Ijeoma, a young Igbo girl, is sent to the relative safety of working as a servant when civil war breaks out in her country of Nigeria. It’s there that she falls in love with Amina, a young Hausa girl. When their relationship is discovered, Ijeoma learns that she must hide this part of herself, though hiding comes at a great cost.

Under the Udala Trees is the story of a country at war with itself, a mother and daughter at war with each other, and a girl at war with her own identity.
